Perseverance:  A steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., esp. in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.

This is my second article focusing on the art of FanFiction. In this installment I will address one of the main downfalls of fanfiction; commitment.

As the heading definition says, perseverance is everything when creating a fanfic. This isn't something you can just “throw together” and expect to be find nestled on the shelves of your local 'Barnes & Noble' (unless of course you have an incredible amount of talent worth recognition).

If you think time isn't an issue; you'd best sign off your Microsoft Word right now, because a good fanfic takes time and devotion to unravel, like a giant ball of yarn. You've got to keep the story line taught and interesting, so that the reader can't wait to turn the next page or chapter.

*Note* ever notice how Mr. Jacques does this so VERY well?

Interest on the readers part really does decide the fate of the fanfic, if you've created a story which is generally amusing, creative or different, there is a good chance the reader will continue to read your yarn.

And finally; No matter what you are writing about, you must enjoy what you're doing, because unless you have a decade of writing experience under your belt you are not going to maintain an adequate focus on your story's plot. Your yarn's appeal will suffer greatly with laxity of quality.

If you balance out these things wisely, and keep your story line taught, you should be able to make it through the grueling mid-chapters of your upcoming masterpiece!

"The difference between perseverance and obstinacy is that one comes from a strong will, and the other from a strong won't."     - Henry Ward Beecher
